Change of Heart

This project to create a video for my family music song Change of Heart was the brainchild of videographer Dave Franklin, and the finished product is an example of his skills. However as budget was $0, I was heavily involved with prop production, storyline and camera work.

Having no money is a challenge, and when we had a brainstorming session with some friends to come up with ideas on how to make a video from nothing, the idea of paper puppets came up.  Dave ran with this, but when he told me his idea for a diorama world made of cardboard, felt and strings, I thought he was crazy.  He asked me to make a couple of “puppets” and background scenery for a demo, and when he showed me the result, I completely saw his vision.  We were off and running.

So we storyboarded the video based on the lyrics of the song.  I set about making about a million props, and we filmed as I completed them.  Dave had to get creative and used everyday objects as filming gear so that he could get down into this world.  At one point, we was pushing his camera across a felt table on top of a stack of CDs, and we had several volunteers that we just rounded up when we needed more than 2 hands.

Although this was more of an arts and crafts project for me, I learn a lot about videography, and I ended up with a small graphic design projects as I made DVDs for everyone involved for our big video release party.
