About This Project

This was a project to create a music video for my song The Trails are Open.  My concept was a montage of outdoor activity clips with b-roll of me performing the song in the mountains.  I wanted explore some unique video techniques to create animated panels of multiple videos showing simultaneously.  This was a new area for me, so I had to heavily research masks and keyframe animations.  I created a storyboard of how I wanted the various animations to occur in sync with the song.  Once I had my script, I then had to tackle the challenge of getting footage.  I don’t have any steady cam or go-pro equipment, so I had to make do with iPhone mounting clips on my mountain bike and ski jacket.  I got some great shots on a backpacking trip to climb Kit Carson peak.  I also got some additional fly-fishing and hiking footage from family and friends.

With footage in hand, I set about creating the animations per my story board.  I also lip-synced a performance of the song and synced this up with the audio.  I’m very proud of the finished product, and I learn a lot about animations and clipping masks for sure.
