What’s the point?

What’s the point?

What is the point of this blog?  Well, that’s a good question, one I struggled with when I decided to start blogging.

Don’t’ get me wrong.  I had a good idea of the types of things that I wanted to write about, but my interests are …um, how should I say  ..a bit “rangy”.   So the topics I had in mind seemed like they were all over the place.

I asked a good friend of mine over a pint of beer if a blog could simply be random musings.  He confirmed two things I already suspected:

1. You owe it to your readers to at least have some sort of focus even if it’s not laser sharp, and…

2. We needed another beer.

So I took a walk to try and figure out just what I’m trying to accomplish by blogging.  A quick inventory of the subjects I wanted to write about, which included things like woodworking, music, web development, art and design, told me that the blog would definitely have a creative bent.

This should really come as no surprise to me.  I’m extremely passionate about creative endeavors.  My friends would probably say, “ too passionate” and that I get geeked up about things a little too easily.  I would say that I’m just an easy sell, but I have to admit that I’m borderline obsessed with creativity.  Maker videos are like porn to me.

I don’t want to simply showcase my own creations though.  That’s a portfolio, not a blog, and a self-indulgent waste of everyone’s time.  We already have Facebook for that.

Instead, I’d really like to write a blog that encourages others to exercise their own creativity, one that makes people decide to get out that old camera again, try their hand at an open mic or make a jig for dovetail joints.  I don’t want this to be a “Look what I made!” blog.  I want it to be a “Look at all the things you can make!” blog.  I really hope that readers contribute, collaborate, suggest and create!  Honestly, I just hope that there are readers.

So there you have it.  The purpose of this blog is to inspire creativity.

Having said that, I’m easily distracted sometimes, so it’s very likely that this blog will wander off in the weeds on occasion, picking up random things in its fur.  Don’t be surprised if topics like Icelandic language, mountain biking or geography show up once in a while.  Colorado craft beer will probably show up embarrassingly often.

I will try to the best of my ability to maintain a focus on creativity.  If you’re taking the time to read this, I owe you that much.

Away we go!
